How often should gutters be cleaned if I have trees around my house?

Leaves and debris clog gutters fast. Clogged gutters back water up onto the roof and into walls. This causes the expensive rot and mold damage that gutters are designed to prevent.

The rule of thumb is season based. In spring, clear winter debris and pollen. In fall, clear leaves as they drop. If your trees are directly overhead and shed heavily, or if you have multiple large trees, add a mid-summer cleaning. Heavy rain in early fall sometimes requires a second pass before winter.

Signs of neglect

If water overflows from gutters during rain, spills over edges instead of flowing down downspouts, or moss and mold grow inside the channel, you're cleaning too infrequently. Gutters should be silent during rain; loud splashing means backups.

Between cleanings

Gutter guards reduce debris but don't eliminate cleaning. They slow buildup and extend time between cleanings to every four to six months rather than monthly, but they aren't a complete solution. No guard catches all fine debris and seed pods. Budget for cleaning regardless, or hire a service on a seasonal schedule.
